Why desktop window and dock utilities jumped 64% this month

Builders shared 85 desktop window and dock utilities on Reddit in the last four weeks, and the group's share of all projects is up 64% on the eight weeks before. That puts it among the three fastest-rising groups in this week's edition, out of 200 we track, behind only AI 3D model generation and AI short video generators.

The group covers the small apps that change how a desktop feels: window managers, dock and taskbar replacements, menu bar tools, widget layers, and the growing crowd of apps that live in the MacBook notch. Almost all of it is for Mac and Windows power users, and 94% ships as a native desktop app, not a web app.

That last number is the interesting part. Most vibe-coded projects are web apps. This group is one of the few places where AI-assisted builders are shipping native software in volume, and the pace has roughly doubled since mid-August.

Desktop window and dock utilities, projects per week from Jul 27 to Sep 28, 2026: 14, 17, 10, 7, 13, 9, 15, 20, 21, 29. The last four weeks are all above the summer average of 11.7 a week.

The climb is steady rather than a single spike: four weeks in a row above the summer average, each higher than the last.

What builders are shipping

Three clusters account for most of the past two weeks. Each project below was shared on Reddit between Sep 28 and Oct 4.

Apps that live in the MacBook notch. Three launched within 48 hours of each other. Tack+ opens a panel when you push the cursor into the notch, with music controls, clipboard history, stashed files and a focus timer (37 comments across two subreddits). Eddie puts a clipboard, notepad and an AI-agent status light in the same spot. Drain turns the notch into a battery monitor with per-process power draw.

Windows apps that borrow from macOS. Glassline replaces the Windows 11 taskbar and Start menu with a Mac-style menu bar and dock. EdgeOS turns the Windows desktop into a live widget dashboard. Two builders shipped a Dynamic Island-style pill for Windows in the same week.

Launchers and window tools. Fling and Halo both put a radial launcher around the cursor, built independently and shared on the same day. Stacker Pro groups related windows into one on-screen stack. Fluid Pointer adds magnification and file preview to the Mac cursor.

A few outliers say something about who is building. Vigil keeps a Mac awake while AI agents are working, a problem that did not exist a year ago. RemoveMacAI turns off Apple Intelligence, which its builder says frees about 12 GB. IsolatedTester runs Mac apps on virtual displays so vision models can test them.

Why now

The data points to three things happening at once.

AI coding tools made native apps reachable. A menu bar app or a notch overlay used to require real Swift experience. Now a builder can describe the behaviour and let Claude Code or Codex handle Swift and AppKit. Only 1.8% of these projects have AI as the product. The AI is in the workshop, not the app. That is why a group with almost no AI features is rising on a vibe coding tracker.

The notch became a canvas. Apple left a strip of screen that most apps ignore, and builders have decided it is prime real estate. Tack+, Eddie and Drain all launched into it in the same week, and Droppy did the same in August with 37 comments. Each one bundles the same small jobs: clipboard, music, files, a timer. Expect this to get crowded fast.

Windows users want the Mac desktop. Glassline, EdgeOS, Halo Bar and two Dynamic Island clones are all Windows apps that copy a macOS or iOS pattern. The posts say it plainly: "Windows Widgets Suck. So I Built My Own." There is clear demand that Microsoft is not meeting, and solo builders are filling it.

One more signal: 281 projects came from 276 different builders. This is not a handful of prolific developers. It is hundreds of people each shipping one desktop utility, which is exactly what you would expect when the barrier to building one drops.

The stack

Of the 172 projects shared in this group over the last 12 weeks, 60 said what they were built with. Swift leads at 23%, with SwiftUI at 13%, which fits a group that is mostly Mac menu bar and notch apps. The Windows side shows up as .NET (12%) and C# (10%). GitHub Pages (10%) and Vercel (8%) host most of the landing pages, and the free and open-source leaning is clear: Halo, Perch, RemoveMacAI, IsolatedTester and Mellow all ship on GitHub.

On the AI side it is a three-way tie: Claude in chat, Claude Code and Codex at 8% each. Cursor, the tool most associated with vibe coding a year ago, does not make the top three here.

Two distribution patterns stand out. Mac builders mostly sell direct from a landing page or open-source on GitHub. Windows builders go through the Microsoft Store: Ralven and PrivLock both list there. The group's full stack breakdown is on its page, and the site-wide picture is on our tools page.

If you are thinking of building one

The easy ideas are taken. Four notch apps and two radial launchers shipped in two weeks, and most of the notch apps bundle the same clipboard-music-timer trio. A fifth one will struggle to get noticed.

The posts that drew discussion did something specific instead. Sharp (26 comments) turns an old iMac into a second display over Ethernet. MacBook Duo (15 comments) animates the screen as the lid closes, using the lid angle sensor. Flairy (81 comments, the most in the group) just gives folders distinct icons. Each solves one problem well and is easy to explain in a sentence.

The agent-adjacent corner is still open. Vigil keeps the Mac awake for agents, and Eddie shows agent status in the notch, but that is about it. As more people run coding agents for hours at a time, there is room for tools that monitor, pause, notify and tidy up after them.

And the Windows side is under-served. Mac gets most of the polish; Windows gets the clones. A Windows-native take on any of the Mac ideas above, built for how Windows actually works, has less competition than the Mac original.

About the numbers

We count a project in the week it first appears in our sources: r/SideProject, r/vibecoding, r/IMadeThis, r/ShowYourApp and five other builder subreddits. That is when it was shared, not necessarily when it was built. Trends compare a group's share of all projects, so a busy week on Reddit does not make everything look like it is growing. "Up 64%" means this group took up 64% more of the conversation over the last four weeks than in the eight weeks before.
